Americans are now advised from the CDC to wear masks

President Trump announced on Friday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending all Americans to wear a cloth mask in public, said NPR.

In past weeks, Americans were advised to not wear a mask unless they displayed symptoms. Now the CDC is recommending everyone to wear a "non-medical" cloth face covering in order to prevent people who are unaware they have the virus from spreading the infection, according to CNN.

"Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure," according to the CDC guidelines.

U.S. Health authorities previously said face masks should be reserved for medical professionals and patients diagnosed with the coronavirus. Now researchers are learning more on how the virus can easily spread, said NPR.

Trump's advisors hesitated when they received the conflicting guidelines from senior officials at the CDC. They were concerned the new recommendation would impact social distancing efforts, according to CNN.

"Given the fact that we know that asymptomatic people are clearly transmitting infection, it just makes commonsense that it's not a bad idea to do that," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert.

CNN reported Trump would not be wearing a mask in public.

"Wearing a mask as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens-I just don't see it," said Trump.
