Search suspended for missing Kennedy family

The US Coast Guard announced the suspension of the search for Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean and her 8-year-old son, Gideon, on Friday, according to USA Today.

McKean is the granddaughter of former US Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and grandniece of former President John F. Kennedy. She and her son were reported missing on Thursday in the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis, Maryland, said USA Today.

"This was a difficult case, and even more difficult to make the decision to suspend the search,"said Cmdr. Matthew Fine, deputy sector commander and active search suspension authority at Sector Maryland-National Capitol Region command center.

CNN reported McKean and her son were playing kickball before they went missing on Thursday. McKean's husband said one of them had thrown the ball into the water and they both got into a canoe to retrieve it. The canoe somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay.

An onlooker spotted McKean and her son half an hour after they got onto the canoe. They were not seen again after this sighting and the Coast Guard recovered their capsized canoe on Thursday night, according to USA Today.

"My heart is crushed, yet we shall try to summon the grace of God and what strength we have to honor the hope, energy and passion that Maeve and Gideon set forth into the world," said McKean's mother in a statement,
